'Doomsday' project to go ahead despite threats

People who fear a powerful atom-smashing machine, due to start operations today, will cause Earth to be gobbled up or reduced to grey goo can rest assured, according to a study released.

But despite assurances, Scientists from The European Centre for Nuclear Research have been subjected to death threats ahead of impending operation of the 27-km mega device.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been shadowed by internet-fuelled concerns that it will release energies so powerful that it will create a runaway black hole that will engulf the planet, or a "strangelet" particle that would transform Earth into a lump of strange matter.

But the new report says these fears are unfounded.

It says the LHC will replicate collisions that already occur naturally when Earth runs into the path of high-energy cosmic rays.

"Nature has already conducted the equivalent of about a hundred thousand LHC experimental programs on Earth - and the planet still exists," it says.

The assessment is written by five physicists at LHC's operator, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva.

They had been asked by CERN to take a fresh look at a safety assessment written by CERN scientists in 2003 that also gave the project the green light.

Two parallel beams of particles, one going clockwise and the other anti-clockwise, will blast around the underground ring.

At four locations on the ring, superconducting magnets will bend the beams so that groups of protons smash into each other in a giant chamber which is swathed with detectors to record the resulting sub-atomic debris.

This invisible rubble could help resolve some of the biggest questions in physics, such as the nature of mass, the weakness of gravity and whether, as some theoreticians suggest, there exist dimensions beyond our own.

The new Safety Assessment Report says that any black holes produced by the collider would be "microscopic" and decay almost immediately, as they would lack the energy to grow or even be sustained.

"Each collision of a pair of protons in the LHC will release an amount of energy comparable to that of two colliding mosquitoes, so any black hole produced would be much smaller than those known to astrophysicists," it says.

As for the hypothesised "strangelets," the report referred to data from the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York to say that these would not be produced during collisions in the LHC.

The review is published in a journal of the Institute of Physics, London.

France has also asked a French watchdog agency, the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN), to carry out a safety appraisal of the LHC.

On August 29, the European Court of Human Rights, based in Strasbourg, France, tossed out a last-ditch legal bid to stop the LHC's switch-on.

The suit had been filed by a group of European citizens, led by a German biochemist, Otto Roessler, of the University of Tuebingen.

I only have the most rudimentary understanding of this, but it sounds like it may give up some stupendously important information. My only concern is that it may create a rift in the time/matter continuum that will allow dinosaurs to re-populate the earth, or allow The Daleks to invade us again.

The Mad Scientists. Honestly, Scientists have caused so many disasters. We need laws that make them liable for the outcomes of their experiments.

I agree! Maybe Fleming should be tried for genocide over the mass murder of Staphylococcus............

Be thankful Graeme, ever time you go to the doctor for all the tools the doc has at his disposal to treat you that have been developed out of research by "mad scientists". (unless, of course you only really on "shaman" for the treatment of all your illnesses) It is the "mad politicians" that allow the output of scientific research to create evil devices, like nuclear bombs that we should upset about.

I hope that this experiment does yield some incredibly important results. All I can say is though, and please quote me if you feel the same - "They are called 'experiments' for a good reason!" :-)

i hope the experiment proves that The Bible account of how the universe started is true.

I hope that this experiment proves that its ok for us to have slaves again, like The Bible says-yeah cant wait for that...

I can see the headlines now... 24 nanoseconds before the universe gets sucked into a mountain in Switzerland.. "Swiss scientists discover Big Bang had intelligent design" "We think we found God, we just didn't expect him to be sub-atomic..... or quite so pissed off" - Prof Evans, CERN Institute

According to Wikipedia, the total cost of this project is between 3.2 billion - 6.4 billlion Euros. How many sick and starving people could have been cured and fed for that money? All that money is wasted for a group of scientists to do some experiments to learn some useless information.

Perhaps, but how many sick and starving will have no further problems if it all goes pear shaped?

All valid comments I'm sure, however it is a shame the funds couldn't have been spent on a send off for Morris Iemma, or perhaps a golden handshake. 10 Billion (if we could have gotten our paws on it) could have been injected into the retiring politicians fund, so they can continue to receive their offices, chauffeurs, secretaries and weekly perks in their useless afterlife.

I think, if this happens, there will be major earthquakes all over the world. The plates of the Earth might even move and start dissolving rapidly. If it is recommended safe enough why would they call it 'Doomsday' project. Sometimes i wonder how stupid people can be to do this. Putting the whole world at risk just to find out some studies. Why can't they except Earth just how it is now and enjoy life to the max instead of scaring everybody.

I think they should wait until 2012 for this doomsday project! Prove the Mayans to be correct about the end of days. This is the end, the end my friend. Coming to see ya Jim, Janice, & Jimmy H. Oh, Elvis I can't wait!!!!

this has bad idea written all over it this could either be mans salvation or its downfall hey im all for understanding more about our universe but if this does get out of hand its not just like throwing water on a fire human beings shouldn't be able to control this much power. maybe if it was done far from earth i would be totally for it but putting a gamble on something like our planet over super advancement in technology is just to scary of an idea to even think of i sure hope these guys know what they are doing because if they do mess up by even a tiny margin.... the point is we DON'T know whats gonna happen could destroy the world half of Sweden or it could be fine and be the best thing that ever happen to our race or it could do absolutely nothing for us. but it really comes down to everyone as an individual.. is the gamble worth it which is why i personally believe this hasn't been in the media that much so you don't get people trying to stop it. as i said before im all for radic
