Budget more bleak than expected: Rees

6/09/2008 4:30:00 PM.  | AAP
NSW Premier Nathan Rees says the economic outlook for NSW is more bleak than he expected, and difficult decisions will have to be made.

Mr Rees has received his second economic briefing since being installed as premier on Friday afternoon, during an unprecedented day in state politics.

Dumped treasurer Michael Costa on Friday painted a grim picture of the economic situation in NSW, saying the state's AAA credit rating was at risk.

Mr Rees has confirmed the health budget had blown out by more than $300 million, and said cutbacks in areas such as capital works would be necessary.

When asked if the situation was better or worse than he had expected, Mr Rees told reporters: "Worse, clearly."

"Like a household, you need a level of income sufficient to service your mortgage or your rent," he said.

"At this pint in time there is a threat to our income levels and that means that if you are looking at us from the outside as a ratings agency, they are looking at us as a family that may not be able to continue paying its mortgage.

"We're going to fix that ... in the mini-budget."

Mr Rees said there would be no silver bullet in terms of averting an economic crisis.

"There will be a number of difficult decision that have to be made across the budget, capital works programs may have to be delayed," he said.

He would not be drawn on what measures would be included in the mini-budget, which he said would be out in 10 weeks at the latest.

"There are difficult decision to be made, I want to make those decisions quickly and send the right signals to the investors, send the right signals to the financial market and make sure we can get cracking on the capital works program that enables us to put hospitals, rail lines and schools and so on the ground as quick as we possibly can," he said.

He admitted it was not "the ideal start" to his time as premier.

"Budget more bleak than expected" - you can probably save this headline for 12 months and then use it Federally. We're heading the same way. Rudd has "funds" that are budgeted as "savings" but will be "spending". Doudle talk/smoke and mirrors if ever I heard!

"Budget more bleak than expected" Geoff, do you think their solution for the bleak budget is to increase tax? TAX TAX TAX is the Labor tradition. Along with pumping more cash into the minority groups, yes it is more than the economy being affected; it is the love affair Labor/left has with the minority radicals. Hey maybe that’s where all our money went??

Get ready for the last 13 years comments, in other words blame John Howard. Typical Labor CAN NOT take responsibility for their disgraceful incompetence. That will be their conclusion, blame John Howard. This is the problem if one can not see the real problem and that is the loony Labor lefties. Now have more control. Well the media may make these loonies fresh and new, as Iemma has planted this spinning seed. “FRESH AND NEW” (fresh new crap)

What else would you expect from a Labor Government? Now, watch the Rudd Government do the same as NSW Labor Government did. They will destroy us all in their self interest.

Does Nathan Reese, who was a cabinet minister with Iemma & Costa, really think that we believe him when pretends to be surprised by disastrous state of NSW's economy? AAA rating at risk? I think it has already gone into cardiac arrest.

Mike D,Bella Vista, a great comment,he is now the Joan Kirner of NSW,I suppose we should be grateful that there is no State Bank to collapse and cost us a fortune as well, these people should be hung out to dry by the population, maybe it's time for a little bit of French history here, the storming of the Bastille,NSW style. At least Western Australian voters have more sense than NSW ones .

Oh, you had no idea that Milton was playing quoits with little boys, lies, lies and more damn labor paedophile protectors lies. You headed up his department/office you have to dreaming to think that public would believe you! Just look at your party's luminaries, Bob Collins, Keith Wright, Milton Orkopoulos, I wouldn't be surprised if that Aboriginal activist Clarke was a card carrying Labor party member as well. Let's not forget those upholders of justice Queensland CJC, now defunct.

The poor guy. He is handicapped by having an administration after some 13 years of ALP rule. There is no money to be had. Most of it did not go in pork barrells, but to ALP mates in industry. It didn't go far because is was squandered. After housing boom, Olympics and with the windfall GST there is nothing to show for NSW but empty pockets. NSW will not do well under Rees, either. Time to give the conservative parties an opportunity. Tell us about Milton.

Ha Ha....Its so hard to feel for NSW, however for strange reason i do?? Strange the lack of support for the labor party here? Perhaps its just so obvious that the labor party have finally done something proper. Too bad it was the stuffing of the State though. Oh Well, we have the big boss to look to now, so sad it looks as though he stuffin the Country. Has anyone in Labor learnt to count better than 1 for you 2 for me, 1 for them 2 for me.....

Streuth, the bs starts immediately, heres a bloke who is best poised to take over leading the party & we are supposed to believe he did'nt even know what was going on. If that is the case I think it must have been a pretty desperate choice to annoint him.

I predicted NSW was broke when they were attempting to sell off the electricity. Kennet had no choice but to sell in Vic, after Cain broke the states back and then put Kerner in to be the fall/woman, Rees will go the same way. They said 2 days ago NSW was $42 bill in debt and had lost its AAA rating, and now they dont even hold an election, appoint Reees, who is even father to the left then the last lot..now they want you to believe him. LOL.

Beggars belief we can be so gullible we allow these clowns to ruin our states, and country, time and again...and we still vote them back in. The minority groups, those taking handouts, career welfare recipients, bigger govt, more beaurocrats, jobs for the boys, more reports commissioned, and on it goes. They get away with it all, while those of us left working and paying taxes are too busy with our head down and arses up, to notice they are robbing us blind. The workers are the fall guys here.

Jan, he was a "garbo" apparently to finance his way through Uni. I don't have a problem with that, do you? Rees is probably better credentialled than many others from his side of politics.

How can someone (Rees) inside the cabinet claim "things are worse than expected". Does he think everyone is stupid. Surely Costa wasn't allowed to be the only person who knew what was going on. And why, immediately AFTER his resignation, is Costa allowed to tip a bucket on the States finances? Whatever happened to corporate governence applying to politicians????????????

Well looks like the North West Rail Link will be the first to go. So once again we will have no transport for another 10 or even 20 years while we also have to pay the most tolls. I think I will move to Queensland.
