Busy start for new premier Nathan Rees

6/09/2008 12:15:00 PM.  |
A treasury briefing and shopping centre visit are on the schedule for newly installed NSW Premier Nathan Rees' first day in office.

Elected as member for the western Sydney seat of Toongabbie 18 months ago, Mr Rees will stay close to home on Saturday morning for a treasury briefing at the Parramatta Office of State Revenue.

During a string of media appearances late Friday Mr Rees admitted the state faces a challenge in the delivery of services and said his initial focus will be on transport and health.

His government would now work to fix "those issues that directly (affect) peoples lives ... in their homes, their streets and their communities and their schools".

However he added that he would not waver from his commitment to retaining the state's Triple A credit rating.

It is not known if the 40-year-old intends to give details of his approach to spending after Saturday morning's briefing.

Mr Rees made it clear on Friday he will not retain Michael Costa as treasurer or in his cabinet, which will be finalised at a caucus meeting on Sunday.

The new premier's second appointment for the day is a midday visit to Macquarie shopping centre at Ryde, in the seat vacated by former deputy premier John Watkins last week.

The visit is expected to help boost Mr Rees' public profile while indicating his party's ongoing interest in the electorate.

Labor holds a 10 per cent margin in the northern Sydney electorate of Ryde where Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell has vowed to fight for the seat where a by-election is expected next month to replace Mr Watkins.

Mr Rees needs to have a close look at why school teacher transfer requests have increased by 1000 percent this year. Mr Della Bosca could not fathom why. Perhaps moving D-Bosca on to another portfolio and reinstating Carmel Tebbutt's lapsed DET staffing aagreement would continue to see our schools staffed and not stuffed. All I want is to get back the transfer rights i had in january this year and a pay rise equal to inflation. Teachers are not the enemy Mr Rees. Too much to ask?
