Celebrity culture of league may cost lives: Johns

Former rugby league player Andrew Johns says the celebrity culture of the game is making life unbearable for many players.

Johns has told News Limited it's only a matter of time before the pressure pushes a high-profile player to take their own life.

Johns made his battle with bi-polar disorder public last year, and says his retirement from the NRL came as a great relief.

Professor Ian Hickey from Sydney University says clubs have a responsibility to ensure players can deal with the good times and bad.

“Rugby League is one of these where really the culture for a long time has tolerated alcohol and drug use.”

“I think they’ve made big strides to change that but there’s some way to go.”

“There is a price to be paid if we continue down the path of simply encouraging that behaviour and not really putting an emphasis on good mental health being part of being a productive member of the society in which you live,” he said.

It wouldn't have anything to do with the obsene amounts of money they are paid; or the culture in the clubs of covering up criminal activities; or the encouragement of not taking responsibility for their own actions; or the fact that EVERY time a player faces the judiciary the clubs hire some sleaze bag layer to get them off. No; it is the fans fault for treating them like celebrities. Here in lies the problem; the players of the past were real men; now they are just irresponsible celebrities.

Step 1. Dont sign multi yr contracts. Step 2. Stop reading up about yourself in the papers. Step 3. Deflate your ego abit. This should help. If not, you ALWAYS have the right to walk away. Anyone can QUIT their Job and move on if unhappy. The Country is large matey, plenty room to pick up and go away to. Problem with you lot is your belief in the so called drinking party culture of League. Dont blame the Profile Johns, try accepting responsibility for your problems instead of palming them to OFF.

I suggest Mr Johns think about this: the reason a lot of them are "high profile" is more for their off field antics rather than the great football they play. Or are supposed to play. Sex in public toilets, rolling around drunk, having punch ups and urinating in public GUARANTEES a player to hit the headlines. So if the poor dears can't handle the publicity emanating from THAT, I suggest they start behaving like normal human beings instead of ego driven boofheads.

Johns. Get over it! Get on with life! Stop being so bloody precious! All you do is kick a football. Stop being so prissy!

AND Mr Johns while I'm sympathetic for anyone with a mental disorder, we noted you didn't make YOURS public till long after you got what YOU wanted from being a "high profile" player and after a lot of people did a lot of covering up for you in the process.

Johns has had a great time living high on too much money without working very hard. He should get a real job like the rest of us. Poor babies they are. Too much money and too little brains!

Obscene amounts of money these guys are paid? They make bugger all compared to other sports people, ie. NBA, EPL, La Liga, Serie A...These guys are held on a pedestal by their clubs! When they play-up, give them the sack, like the rest of us with our jobs! The problem is not how little they are actually paid, it's the character of the people that play the game which is questionable. How can you glorify any of these guys when they are constantly in the news for their extra-curricular activities.
