Nikki Garrett in the mix

Australia's Nikki Garrett eagled the long last to surge to two strokes from the first-round lead at the Ladies European Tour event here today.

Garrett, a two-time winner on the LET, shot a five-under-par 68 to lie equal third.

The 24-year-old, who has struggled this season with her driver, has regained confidence in recent weeks after putting her old driver back in the bag.

"When I went home for six days (in July) I went back to my old driver. I know I can hit it straight," she said.

Germany's Martina Eberl birdied six of the last seven holes for a 7-under 66 and took a one-shot lead.

Eberl, who recently won the Italian Open for her first victory in six years on the LET, played in a group headed by Annika Sorenstam.

The 37-year-old Hall of Famer from Sweden is making her last appearance as a pro golfer in Europe, and was on even par after 14 holes before making birdies on the next two to sit at 2-under. She was tied for 14th with another Australian, Wendy Berger.

"I'm not satisfied and it could have been better," Sorenstam said.

"I did what I could today but I didn't really get it together. I should have taken more advantage of two of the par fives.

"I missed a couple of fairways and had a three putt. I like the course, especially today when the weather was different on the front and back nine, it's a different strategy. Martina played very well."

The second-ranked Sorenstam will retire at the end of the season to start a family and pursue business interests. She has won three times on the LPGA Tour this year.

Eberl, ranked third in Europe, was pleased with her great finish.

"I'm very happy about my back nine," she said. "Today was a great experience for me because Annika has always been one of my idols and it has been a dream come true. It's her last event in Europe and being able to play the first two rounds with her, I'm feeling pretty honoured."

Melissa Reid of England birdied three of her last four holes en route to a 67 and was one stroke behind Eberl in second place.

Garrett shared third with Denise-Charlotte Becker of Germany.

Four-time major winner Laura Davies of England shot 73.
