Staff blamed for Qantas delays

6/09/2008 7:30:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens
New figures show up to 37 per cent of domestic Qantas flights were either late arriving or departing in July.

According to the federal Transport Department 1 in 15 flights was cancelled over the month.

Qantas has blamed its poor performance figures on a ten week stand-off with its engineers, causing a backlog of engineering work.

Typical, the disease (Management) blames the symptom (Staff). Good management would solve this problem, but it would mean that they could not keep ripping out the profits to fatten the shareholders. In the global airline downturn shareholders expect to get their their dividends even if it means sacking engineers and expecting the remaining ones to simply do more work. It is such an arrogant attitude, so like that of slave drivers just get a bigger whip, they'll work harder.

Once upon a time we used to have an organisation to limit the amount of work that management could instil on workers, namely "unions". Today we just have a bunch of misfits skimming off any & everything for themselves at the expense of its members. This includes the ACTU which surely must border on corruption simply because no one could be so utterly useless. At least management are upfront about driving workers into third world conditions where-as unions are just blood suckers feeding off worker

Well said Graeme, as an insider I can tell you that it is the high quality of the Qantas staff that has kept this airline in a strong position. Management has been totally profit driven and has treated the staff with absolute contempt. Dixon and his management style is a disgrace, wish we could bring back Strong.
