‘Rental rage’ surging with only 739 properties in Sydney

24/09/2008 6:21:00 AM.  | Gillian Cannon

The number of stressed out renters attacking or abusing real estate agents is surging, as vacancy rates plunge to a new low.

It's been dubbed "rental rage"- people are so desperate for a place to live they're taking it out on agents - some have to be forcibly removed from offices.

One in three agents report being abused over the phone by stressed out renters, and Steve Martin from the Real Estate Institute says in some cases it's more serious.

“Bullying tactics are actually taking place and we’ve had instances where the police have been called to offices to remove people.”

But it appears the people of Sydney do have something to complain about.

New figures show just 739 rental properties were on the market yesterday, with vacancy rates remaining below two percent for more than two years.

And it's expected to get worse - the Real Estate Institute says demand has outgrown supply by about three to one, and the population is growing.

Well what a beat up Just because those poor blood sucking real estae agents are finding it a bit tuff with having to post pone their overseas holidays or strugging with the private school fees they try once agian to over dramatise the real estae situation. go to realestate.com.au there is a heap of houses and apratments to rent. I rent a five bedroom house in a very nice place in Syndey for $ 420.00 per week and the landlord whould not jack up the rent because a pay on time and look after it

This is labor's legacy forcing investors out and no public housing available - change the laws and you'll get the houses -only big developers have got the market covered - with the land tax in NSW nothing is worth keeping because small investors like mum and dad i.e. working families can't afford to keep that extra little investment! keep going labor you're already done the damage.

The people from sydney moved up to the Sunshine Coast and this place has become a luxury for the rich to stay. They expect the best service at the lowest cost compare to what they pay in Syney. The children on apprentice for hospitality is only being paid $6.50 an hfour, is this country running child labour, just like third world country, ask youself?

Rob its not a beat up, in newcastle its the same thing. some houses had 60 applicants. it took me 3 months to get the house i am in. i applied for 4 houses a day. i have a good wage. it was like a lottery. as for public housing, the waiting list is 12 yrs long. yes go on the internet, but ring the real estates, most are gone when you ring. and when you go along to the places you arent the only ones going.
