Rudd needs to pull the banks in for a little chat: Costello

2/10/2008 10:28:00 AM.  | AAP
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd should pull the big four banks in for a fireside chat, former treasurer Peter Costello says.

The Reserve Bank of Australia board will meet on Tuesday and is widely tipped to cut rates, but the global credit crunch means banks may not pass on the cut.

"Kevin Rudd ought to do what is required in the situation which is to call the banks in to make sure that the Australian public gets some relief out of any rate cut," Mr Costello said while appearing on the Nine Network's Mornings with Kerri-Anne Kennerley program.

Mr Costello said he regularly called the banks in for discussions when he was treasurer.

"They have already allowed the banks to increase their margin by half a per cent. The banks are now charging an additional half a per cent over and above the Reserve Bank rate."

I certainly wouldn't take advise from the Loser without the ticker! Just trying to drum up some publicity for his failed memoirs .... apparently they are in the bargain bin now, bit like the Liberal Party in general !

Good on you Peter. We certainly didn't have commercial banks stepping out of line with the Reserve Bank like we have now. Wayne Swan, with the backing of Rudd, is actually encouraging the Commercial Banks not to pass on RBA cuts. Rudd came out to day actually criticising Malcolm Turnbull for suggesting that the Banks should relieve struggling families in line with the RBA.Whose side are they on?

This so called loser Traci Fawcett,is the one that put the money in the government coffers,by being the best treasurer this country has ever seen.Rudd on the other hand is the one chasing publicity,by jetsetting all over the world wasting taxpayers funds achieving nothing.Rudd should use Mr Costello as a financial adviser, then maybe Rudd could start making some positive decisions, instead of revue after revue, side stepping every issue.

Rudd is digging himself a hole here. He can't (publicly) agree with Costello even though he knows Costello is correct. Similarly Turnbull has been quick off the mark to put Rudd on the spot. "Squirming" seems to be the order of the day from here on in from Rudd!

Gee its grotty down here Geoff. I'm glad it doesn't have to be too deep a hole.
