NSW Nursing home under fire for underfeeding elderly

4/10/2008 11:45:00 AM.  | Amie Meehan
A Nursing Home in NSW's north is in trouble for not feeding patients enough - or giving them adequate pain medication.

Glenwood Gardens in Glen Innes, has 51 residents, with 34 of them needing high care.

Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot says she's appalled at the level of care and the nursing home will now have to run under strict supervision.

“The Age care standards and accreditation agency conducted a thorough audit there and found a number of very serious concerns particularly about the pain management practices being not good enough and inadequate nutrition and hydration as well.”

when i worked in tamworth, this nursing home was suppose to be the best, it was held in such high regard. what a mess. the elderly need to looked after properly. this is a terrible state of affairs. there needs to be tighter controls on nursing homes. snap inspections. not ones where they let them know when they are coming to visit. audits regularly.

This is a problem in the majority of nursing homes in this state that the politicians and govt agencies fail to act upon and is nothing new to those who have experienced this first hand and reported the abuse - when reports are made and backed up with facts including photographs it is ignored - the whole lot of them should have continual checks made and without them being pre-warned. The elderly have been neglected far too long in this country and no one gives a damn about them - wake up to the illegal activities happening and stop the continual cover of these concentration camps diguised as nursing homes which is only a fast growing business to the majority of corporations involved (govt grants of up to 50,000 plus per person is provided - what carer in this country gets that?).At no time do they consider the person who is supposed to be looked after - all they want is their money - the majority of the elderly need high care but that is ignored and they place them in homes where this

At no time do they consider the person who is supposed to be looked after - all they want is their money - the majority of the elderly need high care but that is ignored and they place them in homes where this care is not adequate for their needs and seems to be acceptable - the whole ACAT system needs to be overhauled as ticking of boxes doesn't ensure that once the elderly enter the homes any of this is taken into consideration and never happens - it's not the illness that ends their life in these homes, it's the overall lack of care provided to ensure they go quickly!

That's the problem - it's what people hear that these places are supposed to be the ants pants - all hearsay unfortunately!

i worked in this industry before i became a train driver. getting such a minimum wage $12 an hr was difficult, but you did it for love not money, well i did. others did not. i found the industry difficult. i thought it would be more caring. i was told to toughen up. to be quicker. to make one lady wait to go to the toilet, even though she was distressed. i respected everyone, but not everyone did that. it made for my time as an ain difficult. I would love to see the elderly better looked after
