A gunman stepped out of a car and shot four teenagers on a lawn near their Detroit high school today, killing one of them, police said.
No arrests had been made by the evening and a motive had not been determined, Deputy Police Chief James Tate said.
Henry Ford High School junior Christopher Walker, 16, was pronounced dead at hospital. Three other victims were in serious conditions.
One was a 15-year-old female student while the other injured teenagers no longer attended the institution, Detroit Public Schools spokesman Steve Wasko told the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News.
Witnesses said a gunman stepped out of a car that stopped at a corner and fired at teenagers on a lawn outside Michigan Technical Academy campus for pre-kindergarten to second graders, next to the high school.
Tate said at least seven shell casings from an automatic weapon were found. He said police did not know whether the shootings were random or the victims had been targeted.
