More to be packed into those rafters

Hit home-grown drama Packed to the Rafters will be back after Seven announced it would make a second series of the family drama with filming beginning early next year.

The show, which features Michael Caton, Rebecca Gibney, Erik Thompson and the odd appearance by Krystal Forscutt and Craig McLachlan has attracted massive audiences averaging close to 2 million viewers a week.

Since the show’s debut in August it has become the most-watched regular series on television this year and is already being lumped in the same category as Nine’s Underbelly as heralding a renaissance in Australian drama.

The show centres on a suburban couple, Julie and Dave Rafter, whose house suddenly goes from almost empty to full after their three kids come back home and Julie’s recently widowed Dad comes to stay.

It has been praised for its contemporary feel, exploring topics like Ice addiction but keeping a feel-good suburban feel which is both funny and comforting. Some have even described it as Neighbours on steroids.

Seven’s Head of Drama John Holmes says he has been overwhelmed by the audience response to the show.

"We’re pleased the entire cast will be returning. Viewers have lots to look forward to… there’ll be plenty more drama and laughs and few unexpected twists in store for the Rafter family," he said.

Packed to the Rafters airs on Channel Seven at 8.30pm on Tuesdays.
