Six-figure settlement: Christine Spiteri wins big against Nine

24/10/2008 12:05:00 PM.  | AAP
Dumped Nine Network reporter Christine Spiteri is glad the case against her former employer is over and so is the Federal Court justice who approved the six-figure settlement.

Legal representatives for both sides were in court in Sydney on Friday to have the private settlement of the case approved by Justice Richard Edmonds during a consent hearing.

Spiteri, 40, the television network's former Los Angeles correspondent, sought damages of more than $500,000 from Nine in relation to breach of contract and trade practices claims.

"It's a case that's certainly cried out to be settled," Justice Edmonds told the court.

After the proceedings, Spiteri's solicitor John Laxon said his client had received a "six figure sum plus costs".

"I think she's happy it's resolved and she's looking forward to the future," Mr Laxon told AAP.

Spiteri says the network breached her employment contract when it effectively sacked her at the end of last year.

In her statement of claim, she alleged Nine's news director John Westacott told her: "You should work for SBS, you certainly have the name for it."

She also alleged Mr Westacott told female journalists: "To make it in this industry, you gotta have f***ability. To make it in this game, women have to be f***able."

Various attempts to unseat her from the US posting, including broken promises of a newsreader role on Nightline, followed, she has previously alleged.

These broken promises and the failure of Nine to deliver on the Nightline role amounted to a string of contract breaches, she claims.

Spiteri continued to work at the Nine's LA bureau until April this year, after being told in November 2007 that her contract would not be renewed.

The solicitor representing the Nine Network declined to comment after Friday's court proceedings.

Comment was being sought from Mr Westacott.
