Rail commuters will put up with two years of delays and inconvenience as the NSW Government works to fix a bungle with the new Millennium trains.
Senior bureaucrats ordered the 626 rail cars commissioned two years ago, to have the guard compartments at the back so more commuters could be crammed on.
They've since realised the positioning means they can't see platform indicator lights, raising serious safety concerns.
According to News Ltd, the indicator lights will now need to be replaced, causing more than 700 days of delays across all lines.
The entire project is tipped to cost $10 million, with tracks also needing to be ripped up and some platforms lengthened and reconstructed.
But RailCorp boss, Bob Mason says it was a considered decision with safety in mind.
“We made the decision to move the guards back to support the safety of our customers, to allow them to move from car one to eight without the impediment between cars one and eight.
“We knew when we made the decision we had to do some small investment - $10 million is not small, but this is a $3.6 billion investment for these 78 new trains.”
