Rudd signs off on historic new Indigenous jobs push

30/10/2008 11:08:00 AM.  | Heidi Titins
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has joined with business leaders and indigenous Australians to sign an employment agreement to help break the cycle of poverty and unemployment in the Aboriginal community.

The Australian Employment Covenant was first announced back in August – a private sector initiative led by the boss of Fortescue Metals, Andrew Forest.

Since then, more than 15 major Australian companies have pledged their support to the initiative, committing to provide more than 5,000 jobs between them.

Mr Rudd has joined business leaders, lobby groups and prominent Indigenous Australians in the gardens of Kirribilli House to formerly sign the agreement.

It’s hoped 50,000 jobs will eventually be created under the scheme, closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

just another example of reverse racism. why do they get special treament. get of your ass and compete for a job like the rest of us. we don't have the safety net if we don't pay our morgage, car loans or get paid to send our kids to school. they can wear a black is beautiful shirt and burn the flag but if we where to do the same...

Don, please report to your local doctor for help with your racism problem. This is an initiative by the mining industry to employ people who are local to their operations. As far as your comments about 'special treatment', Paul Kelly sang a song about that. Genocide, destruction of families, police harassment, over representation in jails, and idiotic comments and attitudes like yours are 'special' treatment most people would prefer to do without.

Because it's people like you who are so negative and racist that do not want to give us, indigenous people a go and therefor the cycle goes on and on, after awhile we as a people give up looking for work because we are usually judged on the colour of our skin and not our qualifications. When people like you throw enough S*#t, it starts to stick after awhile and then you start to believe we're no hopers or whatever you want to call us, so we lose confidence in society after awhile.

Well, aint that just cute. While thousands of ordinary Australians are about to lose their jobs irrespective of how much they bust their guts, it seems 50000 of no-hopers are going to have jobs invented for them.

Racist pig. How dare you infer that indigenous Australians are not "ordinary Australians", and are instead "no-hopers". Inexcusable.

Ho Tra - the Aboriginal community will have no hope if that is the attitude they confront. Perhaps we could be a bit more gracious to those who are less fortunate than ourselves. This country is virtually at full employment (thanks to the brilliant legacy of the Howard/Costello years), so I don't think the argument that they will be taking the jobs of "ordinary Australians" will cut the mustard.......

Ho Tra, Melbourne, time for you to leave, I don't care where you go, you just need to be banished from here. You need to be taken into international waters and told to swim away. I say this because there is no better example of a real no hoper than you.

The problems facing Aboriginal people seem to be much the same as those confronting native Americans. If all Aborigines were sent to the US and all native Americans came here, neither group would be seen as being indigenous any more and would soon blend into the mainstream the same as everyone else. Of course that is ridiculous and will never happen but if it did, it would probably work. Unfortunately as long as they are treated as a separate group, they will always remain separate.
