Acting on climate change 'good for the economy'

31/10/2008 3:08:00 PM.  | Gil Taylor
Climate Change Minister Penny Wong has dismissed claims the emissions trading scheme will hurt households and industries struggling under the financial crisis.

Treasury's economic modelling has revealed the average household bill will rise by $7 a week when the scheme goes ahead.

Senator Wong says the logical economic move is to act now, or risk further stress on the economy.

“Delay simply increases the costs,” Ms Wong said.

“If we delay acting on climate change it simply makes it more expensive later.

“So the economically responsible thing to do is to take action on climate change, and to do so in a measured and responsible fashion.”

I guess Penny is dismissing the rest of Australia as ignorant fools. Wait then until it's our turn to say something Ms WONG

Wong Penny. You are busily buying water allocations off farmers and all you are getting is a piece of paper from them, not water because there is no allocation. You are paying big money for them .When it rains again the water you have bought will be worth nothing and the farmers will buy it back much cheaper. So what the hell would you know about economics or the climate.God gives us water, not you. There is nothing you can do.

To add to my above comment and be fairer to Ms Wong ,about all she can do is build up a govt ownership to have better control over a long term future. But it does not help right now at all unfortunately.I must admit that there are so many arguements concerning these issues its enough to drive anyone crazy.

Really is $7 a week going to "solve" the problem of climate change! We have Ministers for the Environment and Climate Change, but stil nothing will happen except the big polluters will be compensated for the emissions and continue as usual. Money can't solve this enormous problem that eats at the root of our very lifestyles and existence. We need to address the causes of climate change, not be obsesses with "economic growth".

Viv, Australia's actions alone might not do anything, but if western countries like Australia, US, etc don't take action, there's no chance whatsoever that China and India will. And until then the planet's going to get more and more ruined. And it's not about fixing the environment for the environment's sake (trees, whales, etc), it's about the kind of lives future generations will have. We've got to do this for our kids.

The "tree and whales" are part of the solution, not part of of the problem! We can't live in a sterile enviroment without our biodiversity, without a complete and funtioning ecosystem. Trees and whales are more than just symbols or conservation and idealism. They are part of our ecology and it all needs to be held together to keep it working! If they go, well all go down the extinction trail, eventually. There are very few wilderness areas left for our wildlife and vegetation.

Careful Viv, I tried to make the same point yesterday and was accused of sitting on my hands and not "getting it". ETS wont change anything, UNTIL the big polluters get on board, and they havn't.Why would anyone believe that China, US, India will take one scrap of notice on anything we do.ETS is nothing but another tax, that will have zero effect on climate change.Stop immigration and stop paying young girls to have babies, teach birth control in third world countries(now ill be called a racist)

As someone that as my job has to travel to countries like India, Malaysia, Thailand, Manilla and China; most Australians have no idea the level of pollution in these countries; and there is no intention to clean it. The money would be better spent with Western countries forcing these sewers to clean up their act. India is so bad that what goes up during the day, leaves heavy scum over everything at night. These people have no concept of cleanliness of themselves, their work nor their Countries.

Fair minded Aussie.I have travelled to those countries many many times too and I completely agree with you. This country has O pollution compared to them. What this govt is trying to bring in here wont do a damn thing except fill their own pocket with tax money.

We cut back polluting in Australia but the human population increases, and so do their demands on the environment. Many countries in North Africa, Asia, and South America can't feed their people and they are fleeing as refugees. World population control is a topic too sensative for Politicians.

We have human rights, economics and religions stopping us addressing the sensitive issue of population control. With no natural predators, and being on top of the food chain, we humans have no natural enemies except ourselves and the limiting parameters of Nature. Eventually we will hit the fan when our water, finances and natural resources run dry.

"We've got to do this for our kids." And just what is it we should do Frank? Rob "We cut back polluting in Australia but the human population increases, and so do their demands on the environment. " and Bob " Eventually we will hit the fan when our water, finances and natural resources run dry." are on the money with the real story and so how do we control the population explosion of about two thirds of the globes population?; AIDS didn't do it nor the chickens yet and so is that fan Nuking?

Neville, I have seen the snow falls declining since the mid 1950's and the rain falls declining during the past decade. I have dry dams and lowering bore water, the gum trees are dying and the vegetation is changing, but the population continues to increase and the land still has to support them. The Politicians want to reduce pollution while increaseing the population.

Historical data tells us that global climate change has been happening as far back as our scientific ability can trace and long before the human race evolved. Why is it that some people can’t accept this and move on with their life? Global climate change may be happening, maybe not but who cares. In the short evolution of human race on this planet global climate has changed and previous generations have just moved on and relocated to a more suitable location. And what is wrong with global warming? Oceans may rise which means less land therefore less people therefore less pollution. Hooray we all win.

The minister continues to act. Thruth is she is not a good actor despite calling on all her skills she was visibly shaken in the recent Four Corners programme when she discoverd how small her grasp of the subject was after she had spent $24 million of taxpayers money to buy a water allocation of about 21 Olypic swimming pools. She fumbled and gulped her way through the questions by the reporter. With another 500 million up her sleeve set to go she now wants to tax u when u turn on a light.
