Cyclone warning for Cocos Islands

19/11/2008 4:11:00 PM.  |

A cyclone warning has been issued for the Cocos Islands, off north-western Australia.

The West Australian Bureau of Meteorology says tropical cyclone Anika is a category one cyclone, packing winds of about 100km/h at its centre.

Strong winds were expected to hit the islands later on Wednesday if the depression maintained its current course.

The bureau said the cyclone was expected to maintain its easterly movement over the next few days, passing to the north of the islands.

It was currently about 150km north north-east of Cocos Island moving east south-east at 37km/h.
