Australia baulks at tougher greenhouse target

20/11/2008 11:38:00 AM.  | AAP
Australia has no plans to follow the US and the UK in adopting a tougher target to slash greenhouse gas emissions.

The US and the UK have promised to cut emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

US president-elect Barack Obama referred to the target in a speech on Tuesday, and said he would launch an emissions trading scheme to achieve the cuts.

British politicians recently signed off on a move to toughen up the 2050 target from a 60 per cent cut to 80 per cent.

The Australian government has promised to cut emissions by 60 per cent by 2050.

A spokeswoman for Climate Change Minister Penny Wong said the target stood.

"The Rudd government remains committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions 60 per cent from 2000 levels by 2050, as outlined in our election commitments," she said.

She praised Senator Obama's stance.

"We need a global agreement on climate change and we welcome president-elect Obama's commitment to work towards this goal."

The UK and US targets are based on 1990 emissions levels, whereas  the Australian target is based on 2000 levels, which are higher.

We could start by cutting all the hot air in Canberra generated by all those in power who think their farts dont stink. But the smell is giving them away and its getting fouler as time passes.

I for the life of me can't understand why Penny who thinks she is never Wong but always Wite keeps championing carbon emission reduction targets when we are only responsible as a nation for .098% of the world's total. To implement the scheme is only going to skyrocket cost of living expenses for the ordinary Aussies.

Our governments lazy commitment of 60% below 2000 emmission levels, and the majority of the publics unwillingness to change for the good of our own and future generations, makes me very ashamed to be an Australian. Toughen up Australia.

Luke, please tell us what exactly has to be done to reduce carbon. None of the pollies seem to be saying what will not be allowed to account for carbon reduction. "Toughen up Australia" - that's not getting us anywhere whilst we are effectively boxing at shadows. There appears to be targets for carbon reduction but absolutely no tangible plan of how to do it.

Man-made global warming is utter rubbish and if anything good comes out of the "global financial crisis" it will be that emission trading schemes are delayed for long enough for some decent science to come along and prove it is rubbish. Sorry Penny, but you are Wong on this one!

My experience with labor in power, tells me they wont have to do much, yet they'll meet their target and better it by miles! Add to that the finance crisis, we'll bust any level set for sure. Why.? because under labor, bussiness goes to the dogs! Unemployment rises, so manufacturing slows to track lack of demand. Less emissions from less driving and manu. Throw in the finance crisis and labor pollies will be beside themselves with Joy. Even more job cuts, more cut backs , much less emissions.LOL

I did not think I had to explain "racial slur". It is even obvious from using "Wong" . Chinese can't pronounce "r"? Do you want to say that because of this they are somehow stupid? And also , everytime there is an article about her, then the regular posters come out and start the same garbage. "Wong" . I also don't agree with her and I am definitly not a Labor voter (hate them even) to use strong words, and I am white european. But thoes she deserve this?

When are we going to have a debate about immigration, at a historically high? How does this reduce our impact on the environment and reduce greenhouse gases? What is "good for business" should be assessed in terms of current emissions, present resource consumption and availability and world population projections. Where are we going to grow our food? We are being gagged from speaking the "population" word!

Worst drought ever. NSW a basket case. Credit crunch. Racial strife on the streets of Adelaide. And what is kevin's response? To have the largest migrant in-take since the end of the second-world war! You must understand that the Left gets its jollies from dysfunction.
