'Mission successful': Australia won't monitor Japanese whaling

21/11/2008 11:17:00 AM.  | Rachael Stevens
Japanese whaling ships will not be monitored by Australia this summer, because the government says enough damning evidence has already been collected.

The Rudd Government has decided against sending the Oceanic Viking to the Southern Ocean, claiming the Japanese will mainly operate in waters off New Zealand.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett says the Australian presence is not required.

“The Oceanic Viking has successfully completed its mission on monitoring the Japanese whaling activity,” Mr Garrett said.

“It has gathered quality video and photographic evidence for potential or possible use in international legal action.

“So it won’t be used to monitor the fleet again over this summer.”

What was the point of "monitoring" the whale killings anyway? Our government was supposed to use the film as evidence against Japan in an international court! Watching crimes, and doing nothing, is a waste of time and money, and shows how hypocritical our government is. With Labor's pre-election condemnation of Howard's shallow response to whaling, and their promise of "tough" action, they are even doing less that their predecessors! Rudd is weak and grovelling to Japan.

This press release has the smell of Rudd's linguistic obfuscation! What a cop out - this is a broken promise Mr Garrett - mainly operating in NZ waters BUT they will still be able to enter Australian waters to hunt & slaughter whales!

This has the bad smell of the fools that used to work for Carr in NSW that are now doing the same thing as they did with pulling the wool over the now bankrupt state of NSW. You voted them now you will pay the price for their stupidity and naivety. And Garrett is a wasted space. He has been told to keep his mouth shut, and his face out of the press, and let his master do all his bidding for him, like the rest of the Labor party.

When Peter Garrett was made Environment Minister I was advised " Now just watch how things change from Liberal policy" & I believed them. So what happened? We got the Minister for Wombats. After this announcement Pete hang your head in shame. You have just become a 'Blue Sky Miner'. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME

Looking a bit lonely in the JWH party there Paul. Keep it up mate. You can always do a Steve Fielding and start using the royal 'we' to give the impression that there is more than one of you. it is a bit sad really, I thought you would have at least got old Des on board. I saw him front Howard in a shopping centre once, it took the mnders 10 minutes to get him off Johnny's leg. Not pretty.

Don't get me started on the pulp mill & Tas Govt. Susan. They have all got 2 heads down there. They have a policy to get rid of all those horrible eucaylpts and Huon pines etc., to be replaced by all those beeuutifuul radiata pine trees from Europe. Only then will Tasmania be Paradise on Earth.

Again Traci you show your immaturity. Denlo, I am Tasmanian, I have the scar to prove it. In fact Tasmania has pure and clean water ways, the likes of which you will never find on the mainland. The West Coast is World Heritage untouched by man...and I was on the Franklin River in canoes, with Bob Brown, before you were born, stopping the damming of the Franklin. The Huon Pine you speak of, my brother can find at will, and does, to make beautiful pieces for mainlanders to buy at Salamanca Market. You see we dont tell mainlanders where the real untouched wilderness is, quite simply Tasmanians would prefer mainlanders took care of their own wasteland. You can only wish you had such pristine wilderness here. State Labor and Federal Labor sold Tasmanians out with this pulp mill, they will feel it at the next state election.

Well, what did the previous Howard Govt do about whaling? Absolutely naught. Hypocrites, always whinging about things the Rudd Govt aren't doing that they never did either.

The only way it seems to protect the whales is to vote green. Both Kevin Rudd, Peter Garrett and green peace are soft on whaling. Looks like it is up to sea Shepherd to stop illegal whaling this year doing what our government should be doing.

Dont bet on it moose, Bob Brown got to busy licking Labors boots after he became famous, with mine and many others help, for the beating we took protecting Sth Western Tasmania's wilderness and the damming of the Franklin. Once upon a long time ago, he was a true Green, even marched with him to decriminalise Homosexuality in Tasmania...since those long gone days, and his arrival in Canberra, he is merely a Labor Party stooge from the far left. He will make a token objection now, then go back to Labor boot licking.

Pater Garrett is becoming famous for what he is NOT doing for the environment and wildlife! Kevin Rudd promised "tough" action against Japan's illegal whaing. They condemn Sea Shepherd for their "terrorist" and dangerous tactics, but they are an embarrassment for our government. They have had success in saving whales and upholding the laws. We have wimps in power!
