Vampiric lesbian murderers should be separated: WA Attorney-General

23/11/2008 6:30:00 PM.  |

Two young lesbian murderers are defying the wishes of a Supreme Court judge in Perth by spending recreational time in prison together, WA Attorney-General Christian Porter said on Sunday.

In March, judge Peter Blaxell sentenced 21-year-old Jessica Stasinowsky and 19-year-old Valerie Parashumti to life in prison for the wilful murder of teenager Stacey Mitchell.

Their friend of three days was bludgeoned to death and strangled with a chain before the two women kissed over her body.

Justice Blaxell recommended the two be kept apart in Bandyup women's prison so as not to encourage their "perverse outlook on life".

Mr Porter says it appears the two are making contact during recreational time at the jail, of which inmates have 90 minutes a day on weekdays and six hours on a Sunday.

"I find it highly unsatisfactory," Mr Porter said today.

"I will look into ways in which we can draw that contact down to minimal or zero, but also take into account the safety of the general community."

A psychologist found Parashumti, who drank blood as part of a vampire subculture, had strong sexual sadistic tendencies, a severe personality disorder and was sexually aroused by torture and violence.

Even after a year in custody while legal proceedings were delayed, Justice Blaxell said the pair lacked remorse and placed no value on the sanctity of human life.

In jail, the problem of continued contact between the two was not easy to solve, Mr Porter said on Sunday.

"The bottom line here is that we have one maximum-security women's facility," Mr Porter told journalists.

"And it seems to me ... that the only two real options are to move one of the prisoners away from that facility ... which could accompany security risks. The other option is to have some form of protocol inside the institution ... to ensure that the contact is zero."

Recreational time may be able to be staggered or split so that the two do not meet, Mr Porter said.

Labor's corrective services spokesman Paul Papalia said it was a complex issue to solve because there were only 180 women in the prison.

He said separating the pair further could backfire, because each unit in the jail was graded according to privileges and reward for good behaviour.
