Financial crisis to send more out on the streets

24/11/2008 12:18:00 PM.  | Sarah Wiley
The global financial crisis could leave thousands of Australians homeless, prompting calls for the government to inject millions of dollars into homeless support services.

105,000 Australians are sleeping on the streets, according to the latest figures.

Homeless advocates are warning that number could rise significantly, as the global economic turmoil leaves some people jobless and struggling to make ends meet.

Deb Sorbaris from Australians for Ending Homelessness says there's one solution.

“What I want is investment in cold, hard cash – and without that things will get worse.”

She says the Rudd government must spend more on support programs and affordable housing.
