Take Japan to court over whaling: Liberals

24/11/2008 6:51:00 PM.  | AAP
Australia must pursue legal action against Japan to stop the hunting of whales, the opposition says.

With the Japanese fleet on its way to Antarctica with plans to kill about 1,000 whales, the opposition wants to know what has happened to the government's threat to take legal action.

Labor last year threatened to take Japan to the International Court of Justice.

But no legal action has been launched, and opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt said it was a "slap in the face" to Australians.

"As far as broken election promises go, this is a whopper," Mr Hunt said.

"This is a whale of a broken promise."

Mr Hunt asked Environment Minister Peter Garrett in parliament today when the government would make good on its promise to take legal action.

Mr Garrett responded by saying Labor had only promised to consider taking legal action.

"The clear commitment that the government made was to give careful and serious consideration to the options for potential legal action against Japan's Antarctic whale program," he said.

Australia will not send a ship to trail the Japanese whaling fleet this summer after last season sending a Customs ship to gather evidence for possible legal action.

Mr Garrett said authorities had carefully analysed that evidence.

The government was strongly opposed to whaling and had announced plans to spend $6 million on non-lethal whaling research and other conservation programs.

So why didn't the Fiberals do more to stop Japanese whaling? In their twelve years of being in power? I simply can't recall any action. The amazing thing is just how apparently Green the Fiberals have become since getting kicked out of office. I would like to hear exactly what they will do if they win any future election, only the core promises though, I am not interested in non-core promises or 5 cent a litre type flippidy floppidies. What would the Fiberals do now and in the future.

Why should Australia waste $6mil. on whale research? Why not get the information from the Japanese or Norwegians, the Japanese must be the leaders in whale research.

Who said the Liberals were short sighted? They've finally managed to notice whales. Obviously, they have taken advantage of Rudd's improvements to the health system.

Can you believe the hide of Wentworth and the plageriser they couldn't care less for 12 years and now the fiberals are all over the place, seen it all before with them in the past.

Why is this so complicated - RUDD said he would stop the illegal hunting. Garratt said they are not sending the boats out this year to watch becasue they already have enough evidence. Well if they've got the evidence, why aren't they persuing the matter in court? Its called holding someone accountable. If you say you will do something, then do it!

There should be ways of making our government keep pre-election promises, and be accountable. If a business guarantees something and it is not fulfilled after their quote or contract has been secured, there are legal options. Why are governments immune from accountability? Rudd promised to show tough action against the Japan's illegal and criminal whaling - but they are doing even less than Liberals! Nobody wants to challenge Japan's economic power!

The fact of the matter is Labor promised to take action on this issue... and they havent. Its not about what the Libral Party has or has not done!

John Smith is right. This is about a broken promise. When Labor was in opposition, they criticised the Libs for their inaction. Maybe they realise now that what they promised is not that practical. There is also the risk that the ICJ might rule in favour of Japan - end of session!

It is easy to make promises when in opposition and a lot more difficult to implement them when in power.

If a party are elected on the basis of their promises, they should be held accountable. Labor criticised the Liberals for their empty words and inaction and promised "tough" action against Japans criminal whaling. Now in power, whales get NO protection - nothing! If we make a business contract, we expect it fulfilled. Why are politicians so easily let off? Kevin Rudd is a show-pony with no substance!

Yes indeed, it is absolutely amazing how Green the Liberals have become given such short time in the political wilderness.
