EXCLUSIVE: Mercy Ministries exorcism books leaked

Handbooks allegedly used to perform exorcisms on sick girls at the controversial Mercy Ministries residences in Sydney and on the Sunshine Coast have been leaked to LIVENEWS.com.au.

Mercy Ministries, which is bankrolled by the Pentecostal Hillsong Church, has previously denied performing exorcisms on residents.

The documents, obtained clandestinely by a girl who “escaped” the group’s clutches, shows counsellors how to rid ‘demons’ from girls struggling with anorexia, depression and drug addiction.

Mercy Ministries’ activities hit the headlines in March this year when former residents claimed they were subjected to exorcisms, were cut off from friends and family and had to sign over their Centrelink payments to the group.

Some of the young women say they had little or no access to the promised psychologists and other mental health professionals but were instead counselled by bible studies students whose solution to all problems was prayer.

Earlier this year the then head of Mercy Ministries, Peter Irvine, said exorcisms were not practised at the residences. Mercy Ministries has been forced to shut their Sunshine Coast residence.

“There’s no exorcism, no driving out of spirits it’s not how the program works,” he told Today Tonight’s Marguerite McKinnon earlier this year.

But the handbooks tell a different story and corroborate accounts given to LIVENEWS.com.au by former residents of Mercy Ministries.

In the handbook, under a section entitled ‘Identifying Additional Demons’ those practising the exorcism are advised to ask the demon’s name, but not for any more details.

“They sometimes talk: they may threaten the person or you. They have been know to say, ‘I am going to kill you,’ and other unsavoury phrases. Command them to be quiet in the Name of Jesus,” the book advises.

Later, the book, Restoring The Foundations, published by an American Christian group, warns those exorcising demons to be firm.

“The minister’s attitude is one of commanding,” it reads.

“He needs to be firm and prepared to press in. He does not need to be loud. (Demons are not deaf.) The ministers’ commanding attitude resembles that of a person speaking to a little “yappy” dog commanding him to go home and stop barking.

“We also want the ministry receiver to set his will to resist and then command the particular demon or grouping of demons to leave him, in Jesus’ name. This is repeated until the demons are gone.”

Later in the book, those performing the exorcism are given more complex techniques in a subheading called ‘What to do With Obstinate Demons’.

Later a list of ‘Scriptures that Demons Hate’ is provided.

“But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you,” is one such passage singled out.

The emergence of the exorcism handbook lends weight to other claims made by girls who went through the Mercy Ministries program.

Megan Smith (not her real name), who spoke to LIVENEWS.com.au earlier this year, said her panic attacks only got worse.

“I was self-harming,” she said.

“I was cutting my arm with anything I could get my hands on – scratching with anything from my nails to paper clips.

“I never really had a problem with self-harm beforehand. When you tell them about self-harming they said I was trying to get attention and I was taking their valuable time away from girls with real problems.”

Finally, she was subjected to an exorcism.

“The counsellor gave me a list of different demons – demon of anger, demon of unforgiveness, demon of pride, there were lots of them and I was told to go away and circle the demons I had in me or around me,” said Smith.

“I was really scared… they cast demons out of me, one by one, and they became quite excited and animated during the process, and spoke in tongues.

“It was the counsellors and myself and they put their hands on me and started praying one by one for each of the demons that were on the list to be cast out of me.

“After each demon was cast out I had to say ‘I confirm the demon of X has been cast out of me in the name of Jesus and is unwelcome to return.'

“The whole time I was there, all I heard was that I'm demonic.

“Even after the exorcism, when I had the next anxiety attack, I was told that they had already cast the demons out, so therefore I was obviously either faking it, or I had chosen to let the demons come back, in which case I was not serious about getting better.

“They kept telling us that the world can't help us, professionals with all their 'worldly qualifications' can't help us, only Mercy could because only they have God's power.

“So when I was kicked out for being 'demonic, unable to be helped, not worth a place at Mercy’ and because I had taken too long to pray to become a Christian... it left me worse than I had ever been before in my life.

“They told me I would never get better now because I had blown my chance. I started cutting my arms and wrists more than ever, with their voices echoing in my mind as I did it.”

Suicidal and self-harming after being removed from the program, which she now thought was her only hope, she went to see a “proper psychologist to prepare me to go back to Mercy to help me fit in better.”

“The psychologist had never heard of them but told me to stay away from them… that person helped me more in the 40 minute session – really listening to me and understanding me.”

LIVENEWS.com.au has contacted Mercy Ministries for comment and is still awaiting a response.

I fully doubt that the facts are real, in most cases this is tall poppy syndrome at its best. what if its real, which i actually believe it is. I find it interesting in our country how we like to cut down those who do the most good. You often hear stories like this, but very rarely is it counter weighed with the opposite side of the coin where countless people have been helped and becuase a minority of people have an axe to grind thats what we hear, why dont you report the good things as well.?

That is the trouble with people. They want to believe in some supernatural fairytales and fall into a trap of relegions. There is something fundamentaly wrong with believers in the first place so they will cling to anything. There is no god you fools and therefore no demons either. No tooth fairy. And before I get a lecture from all you relegious loonatics. Do not bother! You will comvince only people that are as week as yourself.

But Poison Pen, religions offer the salve of hope that there's life after death and if we didn't have religions to spin fairy tales, god (pun intended) knows what the happy-clappers would turn to (the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, perhaps?). We don't need any more unhappy disgruntled people in society. Trouble with religions is that they just don't seek god for themselves, unfortunately they want to share their good luck with the rest of us, in some cases by force.

I just googled "Restoring The Foundations" and there's enough evidence out there, both pro-Mercy Ministries and anti-Mercy Ministries that this was the actual counselling book used on girls in the program. Well done on uncovering it Tim.

They only use this book on girls ???? Those bad bad girls lol...alway has been the bad girls society has had to exorcise hasn't it. Nothing new, look at the recent behaviour of footballers, and the comments, the girls ask for it. Of course the boys are never in need of being exorcised, we all know boys will be boys. Look at the things this young woman was doing to herself, self hate isn't uncommon among young girls...especially in todays perfect society. Says more about society as a whole.

Glass houses Susan, better watch out. You have, after all, publicised the shenanigans you got up to when you were a mere slip of a girl... back when society was oh so perfect, adn so were you....

No Susan Lawe, it says more about the abuse and negligence of this cult as a whole.

Darren I have to agree with Susan. Growing up in a home where I was the only girl, my brother's were not kept in check by my mother the way I was. What did she think would happen? That I would come home pregnant, just like my brother's girlfriends?

The article gives the impression the book is aimed only at girls. I assume that Tim would have made it clear if there were an equivilant for boys. The girls in need of serious help are a product of society. Self hate = self harm. Society is happy to feed little girls perfect images from day of birth, and expect them to grow with a healthy view of themselves. This girl was reaching out for help, from someone, anyone...sadly she was given the "bad" girl treatment, still prevelant in today's society. Bad for not being good enough, bad for not looking perfect, bad for not being a nice girl and harming yourself, bad for not eating/ or eating to much, bad for having sex, bad for having babies. BUT, them ol boys will just go on being boys. No wonder boys have no problem with hitting girls today as an earlier article showed. Nothings changed in society, only now it is a "cult" exorcising the girls. Society practices it on a daily basis.

Wednesday, 26 November 2008

That's right Susan, and after society has exorcised all the girls, it asianates and pagerises them, they are then ready to be indoctrinated in revisionist post 1970's history and unleashed upon the world.

While you are at it you can also shut down the Catholic Church, The Church Of Scientology and The Church of Climatology under its Minister as well. Just so that we keep things on an even keel.

Hillsong need to be shutdown asap. They are a danger to the public. Why is Alan Jones not reporting on these matters? Hillsong have been benefiting form their tax free status for years. Come on NSW government. If you don't shut them down the least you can do is take away their tax free status so that they can contribute to NSW whilst they corrupt peoples minds. I cannot believe Hillsong still exists. They should have been shutdown years ago.

I agree with you Andy but they have become so large, powerful and wealthy that shutting them down may be nigh on impossible.

Many often mistakenly belive mm (sorry don't deserve capitals) to be aligned with the Catholic organisation Sister of Mercy - they are NOT and nor do they clarify the mistake. The support in FNQ is on the rise because of this mistaken identity. There is an even this weekend in Cairns where all proceeds are going to mm. The stall holders are all from Party Plan organisations - do the parent companies know or are they to under the misconception that they are supporting the Sisters of Mercy who rep

Thank You Tim Brunero for bringing this story to light. These Hillsong people are a waste of space and need to be shutdown. Hillsong must pay their taxes like the rest of us and stop donating 10% of their salaries to a BS so called church called Hillsong that do exorcisms on people who suffer from depression. Are they mad. Do you know how bad that is for a person suffering depression? We need the experts to come out and condemn the actions of Hillsong and the government must shut them down......

Tim i like you best when your investagitive ,good stuff.Whats the scoop on these creeps ? .It sounds like something from the 15th century in our own backyard like Scientology on acid . Perhaps this doubly dissolusioned faction of the Pentacostal Church could do with alot more media attention and governmental probing. These people are nefarious and dangerous . They denounce psychology and psychiatry while professing to cure with intimadation and mind control. Keep at EM Tim!

Mercy's next move will be to say that they do not use Restoring the Foundations anymore. In a recent magazine article they stated that the are now using their own program called CHoices that bring change - from what I read it sounds like they filed of the serial numbers on RTF precisely because a situation like this would arise( a leak to the media). What would prompt a *cough* successful *cough* program to change after 25 years, when they already thought RTF was god's gift?

Exclusive, eh! An old story comes back to light! Presumably, if it is Christian based organisation, you could have saved yourself a lot of trouble and just gone to the operation manual Bible where Jesus cast demons out of people on many occasions. In fact, his exploits are discussed in churches all over the country on a regular basis, and have been for years. All you're really saying is that you don't believe, and you want to stop other people believing 'cos you think you're so right!

Posted by: Gordon Bennet, Darwin

Thursday, 27 November 2008

Gordon Bennet, you're missing the point entirely. This organisation lied to Australia about the methods they use. Perhaps you should study the Bible a bit more and you might see that God commands Christians not to lie. Mercy Ministries, their spokes people and staff do not behave like a Christian organisation. The Bible says we will know Christians by their fruits, and it's clear Mercy Ministries fruit just went rotten.

Friday, 28 November 2008

Anon… the point is that no one from MM has said they used this book, which, as far as I can make out, is widely accepted amongst some churches for reference anyway, and covers far more than deliverance. This story smacks of hear-say and innuendo. 'Smuggled out'. By whom? Names? Reference? Is it a designated text book for MM? Did anyone ask MM if it is? Do you judge books by small passages, or by the whole story? There's more to this than meets the eye!

Posted by: Gordon Bennett, Darwin

Friday, 28 November 2008

Gordon Bennett, if you do some research you will see that MM has admitted to using this book. Particularly in some of Mercy Ministries' books they make reference to using it. Also in other news articles they confirm the use of Restoring The Foundations. Until you do some basic research I would suggest you lay off making false rumours and making a fool of yourself even further. The point remains that this organisation lied about the exorcisms.
