A man accused of murdering underworld figure Victor Peirce has been committed for trial.
Peirce was shot dead in his car in Port Melbourne in May 2002.
Magistrate Carmen Randazzo ruled on Thursday there was enough evidence to send Vince Benvenuto to trial on a count of murder.
It was alleged during the committal hearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court Benvenuto lured Peirce to the murder location where hitman Andrew Veniamin shot him.
Ms Randazzo said while much of the crown evidence was inadmissible, two pieces of evidence were of sufficient weight to enable a jury to convict Benvenuto.
As she delivered her decision, Peirce's daughter Katie Peirce clapped and cried.
Outside court, Peirce's widow Wendy Peirce said she was happy and relieved at the decision.
"My children and I are overwhelmed," she said.
"But it's not over yet."
Ms Peirce thanked the Purana Taskforce for their work on the case.
Ms Randazzo ordered Benvenuto to appear for a preliminary hearing in the Supreme Court on December 10.
