A man and a woman have been arrested in a police swoop on a property that could have been used as a bolthole for convicted drug smuggler Tony Mokbel before he fled to Greece.
Detectives from the Purana Task Force carried out a search warrant on the Elphingstone property in Grations Road near Castlemaine, northwest of Melbourne, about 7.30am (AEDT) on Thursday and arrested a 62-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman.
Detective Sergeant Jim Coghlan said police were investigating the possibility Mokbel stayed at the property after leaving a hideout in Bonnie Doon, in northeast Victoria.
The man and woman were at the Castlemaine Police Station, where they were helping police with their inquiries.
Mokbel was arrested in Athens in June 2007 after skipping bail in Melbourne in early 2006 while on trial for drug smuggling.
He was convicted in absentia and sentenced to a minimum nine years' jail.
