Rudd talking economy into recession: Opposition

30/11/2008 10:15:00 AM.  | AAP
The federal government is talking Australia into recession, the opposition says.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has warned the budget may have to go into deficit if the deteriorating global economy impacts further on Australian growth.

The economy is predicted to grow between one and two per cent next year.

Liberal MP Andrew Robb said the government is irresponsibly talking the economy into recession.

"They (the government) are setting Australian up for a deficit," Mr Robb told ABC Television.

"There is no inevitability about a deficit... but run the white flag up now then it will lead to a deficit, it will lead to a recession.

"Kevin Rudd and (Treasurer) Wayne Swan are talking Australia into a recession... it is really irresponsible."

Mr Robb said urgent action is needed to unlock hundreds of billions of dollars in superannuation funds.

He said the government failed to address this important measure at Saturday's meeting of state and federal governments.

"There's not a problem with cash, there's mountains of cash out there - there's no liquidity, it's locked up."

"They did not even address it yesterday, it was a huge lost opportunity."

Yakkiddy Yak. Honestly, these Fiberals are like a stuck record. We'll all be rooned, we'll all be rooned. Hanrahanism at it's peak. When did the Aus Opposition last make a constructive comment, oh yeah, a 5 cent a litre cut in fuel excise.

(unlike "others") I listened to both Robb & Rudd this morning. One talked of the positives (with many constructive comments) and one talked "doom and gloom". Rudd was NOT the positive contributor. Rudd is fuelling the "lack of confidence" through his words (doom & gloom) and actions (panic spending). Yes, opposition is easy, but its good to see Rodd, Turnbull and others putting the positives to the Australian people. Just a pity that we've got to wait till 2010 to get them back at the helm.

I listened to Robb and Rudd this morning. Rudd is trying to sound like a war time leader. I think it might be King Pyrrhus. Except Rudd doesn't sound like he is aiming for victory .. just to line his friends with cash.

One eyed Balls. I realize that to you lot the deaths of Australian Diggers means so little, and that your great leader Howard went to war in Afghanistan and Iraq for no better reason than to appease G W Bush, but Australia is at war, on two fronts. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is a war time Prime Minister, dealing with the mess created by the Howard government. Those aren't tea parties over there, how about you show some respect.

Bolter, before you run away again, You say Opposition is easy, then how come the Fiberals are doing such an appalling job of it. What were the positive contributions of the Fiberals, reduce alcohol tax on kiddie booze? Reduce tax on luxury cars? 5 cent a litre cut on fuel excise?n Tax cuts for rich people? Increase interest rates? You make claims without substance, you present your opinion without proof. But we know you always back the losers.

Rudd and his cronies are just looking for excuses to spend the money that has come their way via the good economic management of the previous Government. They have wasted no time in handing out large sums to their incompetent State Labor colleagues. If the GFC is as bad as Rudd and Swan say that it is there is every chance that we will still be in trouble even after all the money has been spent-what is Labor's plan B when that happens? I suppose they will say sorry and hold another 2020 talk fest or they will keep borrowing till they are turfed out of office and once more the Coalition will be invited back in to clean up the mess
