State govt launches koala protection initiative

30/11/2008 12:53:00 PM.  | AAP
The NSW government is leading the way to boost dwindling koala populations, launching the country's first program to protect the national icon.

NSW Environment Minister Carmel Tebbutt said a state-wide survey conducted by the Department of Education and Climate Change indicated the number of koalas had dropped over the last 20 years.

The exact number of koalas was hard to pinpoint, but Ms Tebbutt estimated between 1,000 and 10,000 across NSW.

She said the $1.23 million recovery plan would entail about 50 different measures over the next five years, including revegetating koala habitats and targeting threats to the animal like dogs and fires.

"The recovery is aimed at strengthening the koala population (and) sustaining its viability," she told reporters at Taronga Zoo in Sydney on Sunday.

The NSW government is taking action now before it's too late, Ms Tebbutt said.

"We know that if we take these conservation methods now, we're in a much better place than trying to recover the koala from the brink of extinction."

With what this NSW government has on it's plate right now, how on earth do they have the time, OR money OR staff to tackle this, worthwhile though it may be. If you spread yourself so thin on so many projects you ultimately end up achieving very little. It's a very big mistake to try and be all things to all people. Better to attempt, and fix a few problems at a time.

heheheh and Tebutt is using the old spin line, "The NSW government is taking action now before it's too late, Ms Tebutt said" I put the Labor Party in the same category as endangered Koala species when it comes to the next election. The only difference between the Koala and the Labor Party is they have already destroyed the NSW economy and have protected pensions. So who has comfort now?.

How about spending this money on trying to fix hospitals to save lives rather than this. If nurses have to bring their own pens into work, then how does Rees/Tebbutt get money to fund initiatives like this. Tebbutt talks about acting before koalas become extinct...the state of NSW will be extinct the way this govt is acting.

The problem is that there is an over-population of people in NSW and Sydney. Koalas compete with the same habitat areas and they are being lost due to developments. The issue is more than koalas - and losing them would be a tragedy of mismanagement and callousness. The issue is also about creating sterile surroundings de-nuded of life, except humans. Without a functioning ecesystem, even they will eventually be threatened too.
