Even Gillard would beat Turnbull: poll

1/12/2008 7:44:00 PM.  | AAP

A new poll shows Malcolm Turnbull would be thoroughly beaten by both Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard if he ran against either of them in an election.

The weekly poll from Essential Media Communications shows the coalition opposition continues to lag well behind Mr Rudd as he enters his second year in office.

Asked who would make the better prime minister, 39 per cent of respondents said Ms Gillard, with only 34 per cent backing Mr Turnbull.

When pitted against the incumbent, Mr Turnbull fared even worse.

Labor would have won an election by 58 per cent to 42 per cent, the poll said.

"Mr Turnbull has been given no honeymoon," Essential's manager of federal political relations Chris Johnson said.

"When more people would rather see the deputy prime minister as prime minister over the opposition leader, I would suggest that is something to worry about."

The polling also pitted Ms Gillard against Mr Rudd but it was no contest. The man in The Lodge won 63 per cent to Ms Gillard's 14 per cent.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the electorate !

Well, there's a pleasant change. Usually the whinge after such a poll is that its biased, or they got it wrong, or it wasn't truly represnetative, or nobody asked me. This time, its the "stupidity of the electorate". I'm always still a little surprised at how much the rabid right wingers really have an inborn distaste for true democracy. Scratch a rabid right winger, find a fascist every time.

Hahahahaha. Oh dear, And there are people out there dumb enough to support Spinbulldung. It's time for a new Fiberal leader now, but there is the problem, the best two have been hopeless. I am waiting for the calls to go out to Runawaycrybaby Costello, I note he still hasn't picked up a job in the private sector, is that because he's lazy or incompetent. Imagine being a Fiberal supporter now, poor misguided fools that they are. Lets see them block the new labour laws so we can have a DD election

I ran a poll recently - 90% thought Rudd and labor were the worst government in this countries history & 10% were still in the toilet when i conducted my poll. Get real - i would like to know who was asked what in the poll. We all know that its how you ask the question that determines the end result. I have one eyed labor voter friends who are so fed up with what Rudd and Labor have done to this country in 12 months that i am getting very cynical about these polls and who runs them

Oh Tony - that's cause you did YOUR poll at a Liberal Party Cocktail Party with a whole bunch of cronies who still can't believe they got thrown out of office a year ago! Very predicable and VERY SAD :-(

Traci, more likley the Tonesta polled himself ten times. My thinking is that assuming Tone was wearing shoes the poll would have to end at ten.If he was at a Liberal cocktail party they would also be celebrating Howards smashing by Maxine the Great. What sort of place must Bangor be with superstars like JAN & TONY.Obviously no schools there.

J Youngster I agree with you the people of NSW are so stupid they would probably elect Labour again and when the election for Parliament comes up they will listen to Rudd's spin and say this time he will do it. Jan

Blind Labor voters can rejoice.Be happy and enjoy. The tide will turn as history shows. I for one am happy . By reading the lines written by most Labor voters here,I come to realise that most of you are bunch of morons and no hopers, and I am so glad that I am not a member of your club. I hear much more inteligent comments in a working class pub from a drunken builders labourer then I read here. Club of jealouse pea brains. I am a swinging voter, in case you wonder, but never for divisive Labor

Belinda- unfortunately I think you're wrong. I think the people of NSW know that labor is shit here, BUT they DO like Rudd federally. So to vote NSW labor out would be like a slap in the face to Rudd & they aren't willing to do that. Most people don't really understand the difference between federal & state politics. And until we get laws to stop them, politicians on all sides will keep lying & confusing people. Keeping people ignorant is the classic form of control....

I hope you're right - I am disgusted by NSW labor!

Oh Traci your intelligence is shining through - my point was simply that these polls count for nothing -unfortunately you have no understanding for how this country was being run to how its now being run - tell me what Rudd and labor have done that strategically will ensure this country continues to prosper & dont blame the GFC as we were in a simular situation in 2001 when the US went in to recesssion. The US markets dropped 47% and under the Liberals leadership our markets dropped by 17%

Given that Rudd is still on an extended honeymoon -courtesy of handouts and a spending spree-Turnbull is actually doing very well. The election is at least two years away and in that time -who knows what the economy will be like. If Labor’s spending spree fails to improve the economy or if it gets worse come 2010 Rudd and Gillard will be gone for all money. The Carbon Trading and Industrial Relations policies will not help the economy. Rudd does not have a plan B in case his spending does not do the trick.

You are such a dribbler Harris. Why would you announce a Plan B in case Plan A was unsuccessful. Its obvious you have never run a business. You'd be a great card player or even a better boxer telegraphing your punches to the world. As for dreaming of a Liberal victory you again show what a dill you are. This oppn is an absolute rabble. They cant lay a glove on Labor and the questioning in ? time is worst I have seen from an oppn.Too many outs, interjections, old fossils and THAT transvestite Bishop.

Lance Freestone, - You make me laugh-so now your Uncle Kevin is an expert poker player. He plays his Plan B very close to his chest yet you know that he has got an Ace in the hole. Go an give yourself an upper cut you buffoon.

This Poll shows that the Coalition have major problems.Bishop won't last as Swan is running rings around her and quite frankly she is not up to the task. The Coalition don't seem to have any direction or Policies at the moment and their Poll Woes will continue until they bring out their Policies, then voters can judge.2010 is only 2 years away and they have to make up a lot of ground but by then the GFC could be over and Rudds Economic creditability could have been further advanced.

Paul Keating- The only place that Swan runs around in rings is in the duck pond-He is pathetic-a Treasurer that couldn’t answer a simple question on the forecast inflation figures and one who could not find the notes on a report prepared by his own department. If the Labor Parliamentarians didn't have the protection of the biased speaker the opposition would tear them to shreds.
