PNG women killing boy babies to end 20 year war

1/12/2008 1:30:00 PM.  | AAP
Frustrated women in Papua New Guinea's Highland region are killing their male babies to end a tribal fight that has warred for more than 20 years.

Two women from the Eastern Highlands told the PNG's National newspaper of the slaughter during a three-day peace and reconciliation course in the region's capital Goroka.

Rona Luke and Kipiyona Belas, each from two warring tribes, said the male infanticide reduces the cyclical pay back violence infamous in Highlands tribal fights.

If women stopped producing males their tribe's stock would go down and this would force the men to end their fight, they said choking back tears.

"All the women folk agreed to have all babies born killed because they have had enough of men engaging in tribal conflicts and bringing misery to them," Luke said.

The women could not give a figure on how many male babies had been killed in the cull.

Belas said getting food was hard as husbands kept fighting and mothers and kids were left to fend for themselves.

The Salvation Army is working with various tribes to bring peace to the warring groups, one particular fight continues after starting in 1986 over sorcery claims.

The Salvation Army told AAP women are so fed-up with the on-going violence they are taking the drastic steps.

"This is what we were told during the peace conference," he said.

"This situation shows the extreme frustration the women have with the men in these areas," a spokesman said.

Is there any evidence this has taken place? We know about the China issues from statistics, with the number of boys exceeding the number of girls by many hundred millions. This is a tragedy that might too easily be glorified. I want the law involved in stopping this.

why isnt this the top story? It's like the news reports, record for bike jump and oh by the way in PNG there killing all their babies. The UN did this, when Australia was there the conflict was not as bad.

This kind of behaviour is rather Sickening. Like how frikn thick can some be! Have they thought of the Idea of just taking the pill, therefore No killing of the Babies. babaric is an understatement, neanderthalithic is closer to the mark. Doesn't PnG have any law to cover murder? They sure as hell had decent law many a yr ago, now they're just going into decadent decent. heres an idea, try Killing off the men and leave the babies be. How sickeningly Sad!

Nick as a parent, I understand your disgust and frustration, but the realities that some people in the world need to live in is so unimaginable to us. For them, this is utalitarian ethics at its worst - sacrifice some to save many. Re the pill comment - these are tribal people not city dwellers . I'm guessing the Salvo's are there to try & help, but I don't know if they're allowed to give out the pill. I know the Catholics aren't in Africa, but I'm not sure where the Salvo's stand on this.

Little like trying to stop Aids from spiralling out of control in Africa. No amount of money will stop it, because the men wont practice safe sex, and think raping a baby virgin girl will cure them of Aids. Al the money and education spent there in the last 20 years, and Aids is still out of control. Until they educate the men it will continue. I agree Nick, there is the pill, but whether they can afford it, or would take it, is another thing. SIck, SIck, and so very sad.Where is the UN ?? Doing nothing , as usual.

Those damn Salvo Christains, meddling in people's lives, ban them ban them all !!!! ......Salvo's do what is best for the people CL, they don't preach religion or tell them what they should and shouldn't do, they administer to the needs of the helpless, those without hope or homes and every other ailment humanity has. They administer all over the world, in places such as this. They do God's work as Jesus did, in the streets, or where those in need are, without judgement. They would be trying to teach birth control, for the sake of the women. The have no steadfast rules on birth control, only to give aid to those in need, and a prayer, as they administer care the best way they can. Thank God for Salvo's.

I am well aware of PNG villages Belinda, I have been there. I was speaking more to those who are there helping them, and NOT all are so far removed from pharmacys and some general stores that stock many things, including the pill and a little civilisation. Not all live in a bark hut , and many things are available to them....it is the mindset, predominantly of the men, that bring these atrocities about, and the "tribal" fueds and wars. No amount of 'pills' can fix that, access to them or not.

susan i would say these ones are. i know of ministers who have travelled in the areas. it is barbaric he said. he being from png himself. his church takes clothes and medicines over regularly. he has almost died from malaria on a number of occassions. so medicine is their priority, coming from tamworth, which is not rich like other places makes it difficult. you don't like govnment helping out, so what would you sugest?

We back to square 1 again Belinda huh ? Where did I say I dont like Govt helping PNG..I have no problem with Govt helping PNG, them more so than Indonesia, they saved many of our soldiers in WW2. I will say again, I know the circumstance in PNG, I have been there. Rather than disagreeing with me Belinda, and picking my comment to bits, you might note I emphasised EDUCATION, and especially educating the men, changing the mindset (with regard to tribal warfare). Many aid agencies supply medications etc in these area's,in fact supply many things, the Salvation Army being just one. I simply responded to Nicks comment on the pill, even then I made the point about not affording it, or even taking it if they had access. Where in any of my posts do you get I am disagreeing with anyone Belinda ?

yes its strange it didnt make the national news. how anyone could kill a baby is beyond me. the frustration thses woman must feel to do this as their only action. the salvos alone cannot stop it. PNG's government must step in
