Sydney speed cameras rorting motorists

1/12/2008 9:10:00 PM.  | Joel Labi
A speed camera rort has been uncovered in Sydney's west, where drivers are being fined not once, but twice.

An investigation's found some motorists are being snapped at two completely different speeds for the same offence on the Great Western Highway at Parramatta.

The RTA says it's an error with their processing system, not the camera itself.

Speeding Fine Campaigner Scott Cooper says that's a weak excuse, and fears other dozens of other drivers have also been caught up.

"Each lane of the road has censors implanted, and when the photo was taken it spells out quite clearly on top of the photograph, what lane it came from.

"If they're employing people who can't read the difference between lane one, lane two, lane three – what is to stop any motorist from being pinned innocently?"

Speed cameras are a joke. Fining someone for doing 68 in a 60 zone is just wrong. Give people a 20 km/h tolerance. I am sure people will know if they are doing 80 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Then they deserve it. It always amazes me how people get caught on speed cameras. Don't they see the great big signs that say 'SPEED CAMERA AHEAD' ? People need to be more aware of their surroundings instead of looking about one metre past the front of their bonnet. The demerit points system needs an overhaul !

I was driving from Brisbane to Sydney on the Princes Highway at night and it was a most terryfying experience. I usually travel during the day in my Toyota camper but I had a good reason to be travelling at night. . There was a huge number of B Doubles on the road and when they travel in "convey" they can be a very intimidating. When confronted with a line of B Doubles in groups of three or four they are about 150 metres long . It is difficult to concentrate on where speed traps are situated.
