Britt Lapthorne's family: So many questions remain

2/12/2008 10:57:00 AM.  | AAP
The parents of Melbourne backpacker Britt Lapthorne say many questions remain over the circumstances of her death, following a private funeral for the 21-year-old on Monday.

Ms Lapthorne went missing in the Croatian town of Dubrovnik on September 18.

The RMIT University student's badly decomposed body was found in the sea off Dubrovnik on October 8.

Britt's father Dale Lapthorne says there are still many questions to be answered over his daughter's death.

"We need to know why her body was in such a condition after only 18 days," he told the Nine Network on Tuesday.

"Where are her clothes? Where are her personal belongings? Why was she found after 18 days only one kilometre away from the club virtually in the heart of Dubrovnik under everybody's eyes?"

Mother Elke Lapthorne said the funeral on Monday was a celebration of Britt's life.

"It wasn't a funeral for us, it was Britt's ceremony of life," Ms Lapthorne said.

"It was actually very beautiful; we had quite a few DVD tributes that people put together for Britt.

"We're not going to say farewell or goodbye to Britt, we actually said 'Auf Wiedersehen' which means we'll see you again."

The grieving couple say the private ceremony has helped them reflect on Britt's life as part of their family.

"We felt yeah, there was a little bit of not closure, but relief that at last we could have our ceremony for Britt," Ms Lapthorne said.

"We just can't believe that Britt won't be returning home.

"We took her backpacks today and I haven't unpacked them yet. I don't know how we're going to do that.

"We still expect a call one day saying, 'hey pick me up'.

"She should be home now with us and we should be discussing Christmas, not having a wake for her funeral."

There has been a Question mark on Britt's disappearence from day one. Bodies usually surface after 3 to 5 days. Britt was missing for 18 days. The inference is that her body was dumped in the ocean at Dubrovnik about 17 days after her death. that explains advanced decomposition of the body. And the police's behaviour in this is questionable. Britt may have unwittingly come across the local Mafia or other crims 'at work'. & the police were loath to get involved when the victim was only Aussie.
