Surfing accident keeping Adam Scott out of PGA

2/12/2008 11:04:00 AM.  |
Adam Scott is expected to play in next week's Australian Open in Sydney despite withdrawing from this week's Australian PGA Championship with a minor knee injury.

And in further good news for Open organisers, American golfer John Daly declared he will definitely tee up at Royal Sydney after managing to wrangle his way out of some previous US tournament commitments.

Scott stunned tournament organisers on Tuesday when he informed them he would be unable to play the $1.5 million tournament after injuring his right knee while swimming in the surf on Sunday morning.

He had precautionary MRI scans on Monday and was confident the results would not reveal anything too serious.

Scott's manager Justin Cohen played down concerns about the world No.17's immediate playing future.

"He was coming out of the surf on Sunday morning and he's obviously stood in a sand depression," said Cohen.

"He went for a body surf and was making his way through the shallow water and twisted his knee a little bit.

"It's a very minor, little issue with his knee and we fully expect him to be back in action and ready to go for the Aussie Open next week.

"We expect to get the scan results later today and we will know more but we're expecting that to be clear."

Cohen said Scott was extremely disappointed not to be playing this week.

"This is an event he loves coming back for, as are all the Aussie events and it's very disappointing for him not to be playing."

Scott, yet to win a four round tournament on Australian soil, was one of the early favourites to win the PGA Championship along with defending champion Peter Lonard and major winner Geoff Ogilvy.
